Sharkey County is located in the southern Delta Region of Mississippi. Sharkey County was formed on March 29, 1876 and was named for Judge William L. Sharkey, who once was provisional Governor of Mississippi.

The county seat is Rolling Fork. Other Sharkey County communities include: Anguilla, Cary, Delta City, Nitta Yuma, Onward, Panther Burn, and Patmos. In it's first census in 1880 there were 6,306 residents listed. In the last federal census in 2000 the population was 6,580.
